Hyla Power post

This article is about government corruption happening in every state. This assessment of corruption occurring in state governments was done by the Integrity Investigation, a project released by the nonprofit investigative reporting group the Center for Public Integrity. They worked with experienced journalists in every state to assess state government rules and systems that were in place between January 2013 and March 2015. They gave each state a score based on their “transparency,” “ethics” and “accountability.” The results they found were very surprising. The highest grade they gave to a state was a C, which was given to Alaska. Only two other states received a score higher than a D+, meaning that the other 47 states got a D, or below for their level of corruption.

This article reminded me of Plato’s “Apology of Socrates.” Socrates believed that political power corrupted men and, therefore, men should avoid politics. This article proves Socrates point that many people in politics are corrupt, as seen by the evidence that most state governments are infiltrated with a lot of corruption. These results are pretty depressing and make it seem like there are not any good politicians out there and they all are unjust. Do you all agree that once someone enters into the political world it is hard for him or her to not act in a corrupt way? It seems that everyone enters into politics with good intentions, but often times get greedy with their power and take advantage of it. What do you all think?

  1. I definitely think politics is a dangerous game to get involved in because there is so much bias and lobbying that it is hard to stick to actually doing the right thing. It is not uncommon to see changes in politicians objectives at the beginning of their political careers and at the end of them . Politicians actually use this a lot in debates to show how their other contenders have changed their stances on certain policies and such. In order to be successful or popular in politics you have to support the common ideology and not necessarily your own beliefs. However, I think Bernie Sanders is a good counter example of this because he has been involved in politics for a very long time and he has stayed true to his values and beliefs and makes tremendous effort to prove to people that he will always stick to what he actually believes in.

  2. I agree with Devon. I think that some people go into politics with good intentions but eventually take advantage of their power through politics. Most people who go into politics worry much about getting a second or third election. For this reason, they can be controlled by majority parties rather than the people because the majority parties or the strongest within government tend to have the greatest influence on whether that person gets elected or is liked among other government leaders who also have a great advantage over whether someone is elected again. It has become less about actually sticking to what you want to do and more about looking good and pleasing others within government it seems.

  4. I agree that politics in this country is more about becoming elected than sticking to your views. Especially in the House of Representatives, elections are held every 2 years, so these politicians have to focus so much on reelection they cannot always give their full attention to the issues their constituents care about.
